Starting Monday, there will be daily devotions written by friends and members of Shepherd of the Valley. These reflections on hymns are as varied and wonderful as the music of this season. Feel free to download the app to get them delivered daily (it's on the website) or check back daily.

Thanksgiving weekend is famous for watching movies together. This year I loaded up on books, but I was pondering our favorite movies to quote and I'm curious what yours are.

  1. Blues Brothers was one of the few movies my brother and I could agree on and most epic adventures need to begin with, "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses."
  2. Moonstruck has some of my favorite lines, even though I find the plot a little disconcerting. "Old man, you give those dogs another piece of my food and I'm gonna kick you 'til you're dead!"
  3. It's a Wonderful Life is horrible to watch with me because I recite the whole thing, complain about Uncle Billy, and grump about Donna Reed's willingness to do the emotional work for the entire family. "You call this a happy family; why'd we have to have all these kids."
  4. Christmas Vacation is another our whole family recites together. I'm not even sure I can pick a favorite line that's appropriate.
  5. Princess Bride whole thing.
  6. Get Smart used to be one of our favorites, especially "Sean, Sean, Sean, Sean, Sean! You see how annoying that is?"
  7. Finally, Pee Wee's Big Adventure makes me want to imitate his voice, which I have mastered, and say, "But what? Everyone I know has a big "But...?" or when it's foggy I like to say,

On this very night, ten years ago, along this same stretch of road in a dense fog just like this. I saw the worst accident I ever seen. There was this sound, like a garbage truck dropped off the Empire State Building...And when they finally pulled the driver's body from the twisted, burning wreck. It looked like this...!

Hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving. Share your favorite movies to quote and feel free to join us this Advent as we reflect on the hymns we sing.
