Integration: the healing journey of integrating the 7 pillars of Benedictine spirituality
Integration is the last of the seven pillars of Benedictine spirituality. This pillar represents the integration of all previous pillars of Benedictine spirituality in support of our healing journey, which, for Christians, is a healing journey with God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit. As Paul wrote to the Philippians, “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. It is right that I should think this way about all of you, because I hold you in my heart, you who are all partners with me in grace” (1:6 – 7).
One suggestion I’ve heard regarding the seven pillars is to pray with them, to pray with hospitality, community, reverence, discernment, humility, stewardship/partnership, and integration. And through this prayer, ask what God is asking of you. How might you change your way of being in the world to embody and share each of these seven pillars? Seven is a lot, so maybe take them one-by-one, and know that although your continued journey toward healing is yours, you do not travel it alone. You will journey with God, with Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Communion of Saints, your communities here on earth, and with all of creation. May each of us do this journey and may we do it together.
