Humility: leads to a more loving stance in the world through authenticity
Humility often gets a bad rap. Humility and humiliation have the same root—humus—which means “earth” or “soil,” and, given this similarity, too often we don’t create enough distinction between these two words. Additionally, false or feigned humility—when a person is self-deprecating for manipulative or attention-seeking reasons—is a very real thing. And yet, we all know true humility when we encounter it, don’t we? True humility requires that a person first plant their feet in their own God-given worth.
The Rule of St. Benedict has a chapter on humility, which outlines the 12 degrees of humility, often referred to as the 12 steps of the ladder of humility. The first step is to recognize and respect the presence of God. What a refreshing way to encounter Psalm 23, and what a powerful first step toward humility! The Psalm recognizes and praises the abundance of God and God’s constant presence, whether we are taunted by “enemies” or in the throes of despair. When we begin to see and appreciate God’s presence and gifts, we open the door to knowing we are worthy of unending presence, mercy, and love from God. Each of us. All of us. No exceptions. Plant your feet there and begin the journey toward humility, not meekness, not crassness, but steadfast, grounded, and patient humility.
