In Genesis 32, Jacob is on his way home to face his parents and his brother Esau, from whom he stole the family birthright. After more than 14 years of living with his uncle Laben, he returns with his four wives and his children from whom the 12 tribes of Israel will grow. He is anxious, wondering how he will be received at home. Jacob brings gifts for his brother, but fears battle.
The night before he arrives, Jacob sleeps on a river bank where he wrestles a mysterious figure through the night.
The story has several interpretations. Sometimes the figure is described as an angel, but sometimes the figure is recognized as God himself.
Perhaps this outward struggle exists to show us the inner struggle Jacob is suffering. Perhaps his willingness to face his fears proves Jacob worthy to father the Jewish people.
When morning dawns, Jacob has won. He is given a blessing and a new name: Israel. The following day, Jacob returns home to be embraced by his family.
