Ash Wednesday, I sit in a sunny Juneau on Ash Wednesday trying to heal my body from some sort of cold/flu I knew my devotion due, what would it be? Would I turn to a favorite passage from the Bible and ask God to impart some wisdom as a punch away at a keyboard? The sun God provided gave me the opportunity to wash bedding and lay comforters in the sun to receive some extra disinfection, so with doors and windows wide open I went about my day cleaning the cozy condo and came across a 40 Day Live Lent Challenge, A Color Method Study for Luke and Acts by Margaret Feinberg! Perfect - I knew what I would shift my focus on for Lent, Coloring through the books of Luke and Acts! I am curious what God will reveal to me in this time I set aside, ask me after Easter :).
As I went about my day I was shocked to find a beautiful hummingbird had flown into my condo and was trying to get out by way of a fixed picture window. I quickly put Clara in my room because as sweet as she is, I have seen what happens when she gets a bird in her mouth. I then called Tempel because he is the birder in the family he had no advice other than get it back outside. I soon realized that part of the window opens (this is not something we open ever in a fourth floor condo). So with the help of a folder my little Rufous Hummingbird an adult male I named Pedro because he came all the way to my condo from Mexico made his way back outside into big bad Auke Bay to fend for himself.
As spring arrives, so do many transitions for me and my family. My husband will retire and we will do some travel that will take us back to his home in the Netherlands for 9 months next winter. I lean towards being an over planner (if there is such a thing), and at the moment have many spinning plates in the air re: this transition time. One being, how we will live on a fixed income. I am reminded of a favorite verse:
Luke 12:24 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest, they don’t have storerooms or barns, but God feeds them.
Lord, in this time of Lent teach me to trust in you. Thank you for your provisions, care and love. Thank you for the cycle of the seasons and the return of the hummingbirds. May I learn to become more like you in all that I say and do.
