Matthew 11:28
“Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

One of my favorite shows in New Zealand is the BBC series “The Repair Shop.” On this show people bring their broken, ruined possessions to the Repair Shop, a large barn/workshop, in the hope that the professional crafts people will be able to fix what has been broken. Many sheepishly admit that they were the ones who damaged, abused, or neglected their precious possessions, and even did more damage by trying to do the repairs themself. They may be ashamed and have hidden the damaged pieces from family or friends, hiding away the broken pieces in boxes, attics, or old barns. They finally are ready to face up to the reality there is nothing they can do. They need help.
Some pieces were left out in the weather, neglected, or forgotten. Others literally arrive in a million tiny shards in the bottom of a bag or box. Clock hands no longer move, music boxes no longer play, toys no longer respond when wound. With embarrassed, tear filled eyes, they ask for help. In each case they let go of the burden, releasing the pieces to the Repair Shop. The team works their magic and when the owners return there are tears of joy and amazement - the team has made repairs beyond their wildest dreams. Thanks and smiles abound.
Aren’t we just the same as these owners? Ashamed of our mistakes, heartsick to think of the damages we can’t fix on our own, exhausted, we finally turn to God in prayer and confession.

Lord, I made a mess of things. Can you ever forgive me, and let me begin anew?” And then we hear Jesus’ words “Lay your guilt and burdens down here with me. I make all things new.” They may still have cracks or scars, but all is forgiven. We can start again.

Jesus, we thank you for always being there, willing to forgive us and make us whole. Help us to be willing to accept your help and forgiveness with a grateful heart. In your name we pray
