Hebrews 4:14 – 5:10

Link to Bible Verses: Hebrews 4-5

Hospitality: Giving space to others without demands or expectations.

I am struck by the wisdom of Chapter 5, verse 2: “He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset with weakness.”

How are you all doing with your Lenten journeys? We’re a week in. Are you still in the phase of being overly confident? Are you still holding onto expectations for perfection throughout your journey? Or are you beginning to face your “weaknesses,” your need for love, support, and mercy?

Ultimately, the realization that we are wrapped in an interdependent relationship with each other and Christ is the hope of Lent, isn’t it? Yes, interdependence. This isn’t a one-way relationship, especially with Christ. According to this passage, he depends on his humanity—through our ongoing humanity—to be patiently present to our wayward ways. Christ needs us to be Christ in the world, and we need Christ to continue living the human condition as best as we can. We are wrapped in a relationship of mutual hospitality with Christ.

So as you continue your Lenten journey, keep in mind that Christ needs you to be imperfectly present, imperfectly persistent, imperfectly loving, and imperfectly hospitable.
