Matthew 10:10. Do not take a bag for the journey. Do not take extra clothes or sandals or walking sticks. A worker should be given what he needs.
We travel a lot, and I’ve filled more than my share of suitcases. I could learn a few things from this verse, though. You see, I always make a list, and check things off as items go in my suitcase. And then add a few things “just in case…”. Suddenly my bag is anpproaching maximum capacity. And that’s where I could learn a few things from this verse. It might lighten my load.
I think Jesus wanted his disciples to focus on their mission without too many things to weigh them down and hold them back, and learn to trust God for their basic needs. They were to trust that the people they met along the way would cheerfully supply their needs: a place to stay, a meal, or a clean robe. They would have time to do what they’d been sent out to do—share God’s love.
Well, I will work on trusting God more each day, but I’ll still bring a bag. And my toothbrush. But I might work on leaving the extra shirts and socks.
Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to remind us that you supply all that we need for this journey through life. Please walk with us, and remind us to share your love with all those we meet along the path. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
